Viryd Technologies (Viryd) was founded in 2007 to develop and commercialize NuVinci® Continuously Variable Planetary (CVP) transmission technology for the wind industry. NuVinci CVP technology was invented by Fallbrook Technologies Inc. (Fallbrook) and enables a new class of continuously variable transmission (CVT). Traction-based, NuVinci transmissions are ideally suited for applications in virtually any mechanical device that has a transmission, or which requires speed variation.
Viryd was created as an independent subsidiary of Fallbrook and has now received funding from external investors. The company is actively working to bring this breakthrough technology to the wind energy market.
Fallbrook began investigating the application of NuVinci technology in Wind Energy in 2004. NREL (National Renewable Energy Lab) studied the potential benefits of NuVinci CVP technology in a wind turbine application, and the findings showed a considerable performance benefit using NuVinci technology in lieu of a standard wind turbine transmission and power electronics systems. See NREL Report for the complete report.
Fallbrook created Viryd Technologies to dedicate and focus resources to the application of NuVinci CVP technology for wind energy. Viryd has an exclusive license to NuVinci technology for Wind Energy applications. As a first step, Viryd is developing a residential class wind turbine, incorporating the CVP technology, to demonstrate the benefits. The expected benefits are substantially lower cost, greater energy capture and improved system reliability.
Viryd is actively looking for installation/distribution partners, OEM customers looking to deploy our technology, component suppliers, and other partners interested in going to market with us.
